Key Thermodynamic Terms and Equations

Perfect Gas Law

pV = n RT

1st Law of Thermodynamics - Conservation of energy

ΔUint = Q - W

Adiabatic - no heat transfer, occurs with a rapid expansion or contraction of a gas

 W = ΔUint

Isobaric - constant pressure, typical for a pneumatic cylinder

W = P (ΔV)

Isovolumetric - constant volume, can't do work

W = 0

ΔUint = Q

Isothermal (perfect gas) - constant temperature

W = nRT ln(Vi/Vf)

Carnot Cycle - the perfect heat engine

  1. Isothermal expansion
  2. Adiabatic expansion
  3. Isothermal compression
  4. Adiabatic compression

Heat Engine - converts heat to work. According to the 2nd Law 100% of a quantity of heat can never be converted to work.

Actual efficiency = W/Qh

Carnot efficiency = 1 - Tc/Th

Heat Pump - makes heat flow "backwards" from cold to hot, COP is coefficient of performance, the higher the better

Actual COP = Qc/W

Ideal:  COP = Tc/(Th - Tc)

Want to learn more about movie physics in Star Trek and find out :
  • what makes Star Trek unique
  • how Star Trek compares to Star Wars
  • why the star ship Enterprise needs to remain in space
  • what should and shouldn't be done in space battles
  • what it takes to blast off and travel the galaxy
  • the basics of orbiting
Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics is one of the most humorous, entertaining, and readable physics books available, yet is filled with all kinds of useful content and clear explanations for high school, 1st semester college physics students, and film buffs.

It explains all 3 of Newton's laws, the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics, momentum, energy, gravity, circular motion and a host of other topics all through the lens of Hollywood movies using Star Trek and numerous other films.

If you want to learn how to think physics and have a lot of fun in the process, this is the book for you!
